Stevie Bonifield, The Verge (and countless social media posts):
If you’ve been feeling nostalgic for your old iPod, you can head over to Apple Music’s 404 page to listen to music on a virtual re-creation of the first-generation iPod. The hidden iPod was spotted by users on social media on Friday. It’s appropriately stocked with music from the early 2000s, like Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” or Gorillaz’s “Feel Good Inc.” The iPod seems to pop up on any non-existent Apple Music page, so you can find it by just adding a string of random letters after the main Apple Music URL.
Any non-existent URL works. I used https://music.apple.com/jason because why not?
You’ll need to enter the URL in a web browser, as clicking the link opens up the Apple Music app.
It’s a surprisingly faithful recreation of the iPod interface, right down to the “haptic” clicks as you twirl the center wheel.
(At one point, I spun and randomly clicked a song and was immediately transported.)
Perhaps not coincidentally, I seem to own (or “own”) about half of the music available on the virtual iPod. The early 2000s very much felt like a musically monocultural moment, with all of us downloading the same songs. The recreation captures that zeitgeist rather well.
