Apple Releases New iMac with M6

Apple Newsroom:

Apple today announced the new iMac featuring the superfast M6, delivering even more performance and powerful AI capabilities in its strikingly thin all-in-one design. From families and aspiring creators to small businesses, users will experience the speed and power of M6 in everything they do. Featuring a faster CPU and GPU with Neural Accelerators in each core, it blazes through everyday apps and multitasking while delivering powerful performance for creative workflows like photo and video editing. For Intel-based upgraders, the leap is even greater, with up to 18x faster performance than the most popular Intel-based iMac.

I love that Apple is comparing the performance of the iMac M6 to an Intel-based iMac. I’m guessing most people still using an iMac have one with Intel inside.

I’ll be honest. I haven’t thought about iMac in years. My last one was the 2017 27-inch iMac Pro 5K, which, admittedly, was one of my favorite computers. I’ve long since moved on to the desktop-laptop lifestyle, with a 14-inch MacBook Pro connected to an Apple Studio Display as my main “working” computer (and a 13-inch MacBook Air as my everyday and travel system). Most people I know also prefer laptops for their flexibility and portability.

If you’re a desktop aficionado, this M6 iMac looks great. Everything about it blazes: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, optional 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, 2x faster SSD, Thunderbolt 4.

Pricing starts at $1,500 for the model with two Thunderbolt ports, 10-core CPU and GPU, 16GB memory, and 256GB storage. It rises as high as $3,300 for the model with four Thunderbolt ports, 12-core CPU and GPU, 32GB memory, and 2TB storage, plus a new nano-texture glass option.

Preorders for iMac M6 open October 28. Availability starts November 6.
