But my very favorite story about GLO is when she was out one day in NY, and a woman approached her in absolute awe and said she wanted to introduce her young daughter to her (though she was embarrassed to say the young girl may not know who she was).

Gloria replied: “It doesn’t matter if she knows who I am. What matters is that she knows who SHE is.”

I was fortunate to grow up around strong, successful women who shattered notions of patriarchy and instilled in me an unwavering sense of gender equality. By the time I came of age, feminism and women’s equality were rarely debated. To oppose it was to expose your ignorance. Of course women could become doctors and lawyers and CEOs and congresspeople and astronauts—even as we still frustratingly experience a surprising number of “first woman to…” moments and have failed to shatter a surprisingly resilient glass ceiling.

Witnessing the recent and ongoing unraveling of women’s rights must have been a tremendous disappointment to Ms. Steinem, but many of us remain proud to call ourselves feminists.
