As horrific as it is to watch the World Trade Center towers crumble to the ground, those indelible images were recorded from the relative safety of the streets below. The final phone calls and voicemails left by 9/11 victims, however, provide a raw, real-time record of what it was like to be trapped inside the towers or aboard one of the hijacked planes.
Twenty-five years later and I still find it difficult to read or watch anything related to these attacks. I couldn’t make it through this article without becoming emotional. Actually hearing these calls would shatter me.
