Anna-Lee Craig’s entry in Dallas Taylor’s ongoing Hamilton sound series deserves its own post, rather than being lost in a “See Also.” Craig, or “ALC” as she’s called, is the show’s A2 (Assistant Audio Engineer). She reveals—
[…] the intricate world of Broadway microphone craft. From custom-built head rigs made with galvanized steel and fly-fishing line to mics hidden inside the crowns, every piece of the audio setup is hand-fitted to each performer for a nearly invisible fit. [She] walks through the signal chain from transmitter to mixing console, the transition from head-worn mics to booms for the women’s ensemble, and what it means to be the mechanic changing wheels while the bus keeps rolling.
ALC is responsible for fitting and caring for all of the performers’ mics. The custom-built, hand-fitted head rigs are her handiwork—known on the production as “an ALC special.” She exudes such extreme competence, immeasurable warmth, and unbounded joy that I got quite the Kaylee-from-Firefly vibe, to the point where I want to call her “A-Lee.”
