It’s Time to Get Things Started… ‘The Muppet Show’ Returns

I’ve always loved all things Muppets, but nothing as much as I do The Muppet Show, so the one-off “special event” was a Great Gonzo cannonball aimed right at my childhood feels. I watched it this afternoon (it’s now streaming on Disney+ and airing tonight on ABC), and as soon as Kermit popped out of the “O” to announce very special guest star Sabrina Carpenter and the Muppets started singing that joyous theme song, it was goosebumps. Carpenter is a delight who, as Kermit observes, fits right in with the Muppet cast. (She also does a remarkably credible Dolly Parton… impersonation? homage? in an Islands in the Stream duet with Kermit). As always, though, it’s the backstage mayhem and unpredictable performances that are the real draw. The special radiates with the same exuberant spirit of the original. I hope it returns as a regular series.
