I Am a Scorpion, Said Meta. It Is My Nature.

Karl Bode:

In case you missed it, and I envy you if you did, Facebook/Meta recently unveiled “Muse,” its new AI agent that’s supposed to help you do things like craft emails, make dinner reservations, sell products on Facebook Marketplace, and offload mundane tasks to a massive and violently-unethical online ad monopoly. […]

Meta claimed repeatedly that their new Muse agent was built with a heavy focus on privacy and security. But this is Meta, a soggy ad monopoly run by an unfireable authoritarian-friendly manbaby with a long history of making positively terrible choices, so things very quickly got out of control.

Right out of the gate, Muse launched with a nasty zero-day flaw that created a backdoor on Mac computers, allowing a hacker to not only gain total control of the Muse AI client, but surveil you without your knowledge.

Muse also disclosed a YouTuber’s home address (without permission), accessed text messages and sent them to Meta (without permission), and compromised its own file system (just because someone asked it to).

Meta is the last Big Tech company I’d allow to access my computer. I’d just as soon grant access to a stranger on the street. I am unsurprised by these privacy violations, because Meta is the scorpion in the fable. It cannot help but abuse your privacy. It is its nature.
