Casey Liss contemplated leaving Verizon to save money:
So, I went to Verizon’s website, and tried to find the place where I could start the number porting process. I couldn’t find it quickly, so I searched forport number.
And I’ll be damned, but once I saw the results of my search, right there at the top, just below the search box, was an offer to save $20 per month per line. Just because.
We’re Verizon customers, too, so I followed his steps, and sure enough, there was a “loyalty” offer to save $20 a month for a year.
Like Liss, I doubted this was just “available” without any caveats, but as we both found, it’s just there for the taking, simply for (apparently) seeking to leave Verizon.
I get that it’s not exactly in Verizon’s best interests to give me the best deal they possibly can. I get that they’re a business designed to extract money from my wallet, so they can place it in theirs. But still, this felt gross. It was only when they [rightly!] detected they were in the midst of a potential case of churn that they suddenly found a way to lower my bill.
Cable and internet companies have been pulling this bullshit for years, of course, and no doubt AT&T, T-Mobile, and the rest all have similar shitty retention offers. Why not just lower the price?
Thanks to Liss and this one weird trick, my bill now shows a “LOYAL $20 FOR 12 MO” discount through January 2027. With five lines on our account (three parents, my wife, and me) this saves us $1,200.
